Ironing Board Covers

An Ironing Board Cover That Makes Ironing Easier And Faster
Washing and drying may have been totally mechanized thanks to advances in technology, but ironing is still a manual, very laborious process and most of us can't escape it. What is however heartening is that there are many products available in the market that make this backbreaking task somewhat easier. Among these are advanced irons, ironing boards and ironing board covers.
What makes ironing board covers a must for every ironing board
You cannot iron effectively without an ironing board and an ironing board cannot be used without an ironing board cover. Ironing boards are typically made of wood or metal. If there is no ironing board cover, the wood would get burnt and the metal would become unbearably hot, making it a safety hazard. Even the clothes can suffer irreparable damage if ironed on a board without a cover.
What is an ironing board cover?
An ironing board cover is a thick padded material folded across the top of an ironing board or table to provide a flat, smooth and continuous ironing surface. This cover is secured to the ironing board with the help of drawstrings, Velcro, belts or elastic to keep it firmly in place.

What to look for when buying an ironing board cover.
Everyone has certain expectations when they buy an ironing board cover. You'd want the cover to fit your board perfectly whatever size it might be. You would not want the cover to slip, crease or even move an inch when you're ironing. You'd want something bright and cheerful but would not want the color to run and ruin your clothes. When you wash your cover, you'd want it to stay intact. And surely you'd want it to last you a long time. Keeping a few simple things in mind when you set out to buy a cover for your ironing board might help:
-
It should be asbestos free. Covers made from asbestos fiber pose a serious health risk, especially when they show signs of wear and tear. Stay away from these at any cost.
-
The surface fabric should 100% cotton. Synthetic fabrics cannot take the intensity of the heat and may melt and damage the iron, the board and your clothes.
-
Look for a cover that is flexible enough to fit standard sized boards of any kind. In the future when you go for a new board, you can still retain the cover in case it is in a good condition.
-
It should fit perfectly over your ironing board. Only if it fits well will you have a totally crease free flat surface which will ensure proper ironing. Make sure your cover has Velcro elastic or drawstrings as these help achieve that perfect fit.
-
It should be thick enough with enough padding to absorb all the heat and prevent heat from reaching and damaging the board
-
It should be resistant to water corrosion. Steam from the iron should not damage the cover or the padding.
-
Opt for colors that won't run or fade. Moisture and heat can cause some colors to run and this can damage your clothes.
-
If possible get a double sided cover, so that when one side wears out or gets damaged, you can just turn it over to get a new cover all over again.

How to take care of your ironing board covers
Even though most ironing board covers are sturdy and durable, they still need some amount of care and maintenance to keep them going for a long time. Most covers are made from 100% cotton which means that when these are constantly exposed to moisture over a period of time the cotton tends to deteriorate. By taking the following preventive steps you can slow down this process.
-
Ensure that you never leave the iron face down on the ironing board. This leads to scorching and ugly marks on the cover. Always leave your iron standing up and if you never can remember to do that, use an iron mat to place the iron.
-
If you make regular use of starches when you iron, wash your ironing board cover regularly. This will remove any excess starch that is left on the cover. It left unwashed, starch will make your ironing board cover to become hard and brittle.
-
Make sure you never fill your iron with water when it is placed over the cover. Water will invariably spill and cause the cotton to deteriorate. Salts and minerals in the water can also lead to discoloration of the fabric
-
Make sure your iron doesn't leak. A leaky iron can cause premature wear and tear.
Invest in a good quality ironing board cover, take good care of it, replace it when needed and you're sure to achieve perfect results each time. Creases and wrinkles will be a thing of the past and ironing might actually become a lot more enjoyable.
